In the United States, a great Civil War distracted the nation for the first half of the decade. The latter part of the 1860s were spent rebuilding the nation. Elsewhere in North America, Napoleon III attempted to establish an empire in Mexico early in the decade. Following the end of the U.S. Civil War he was forced to remove French troops from Mexico and the French puppet, Maximilian was defeated and executed by Juarez. In Central America Honduras, Nicaragua, and San Salvador tried to establish a Central American Union in 1862. In 1867, the Dominion of Canada was established by the British North American Act.
In Europe in the 1860’s, wars raged across the Italian peninsula in the early part of the decade, leading to the creation of the Kingdom of Italy. Later in the decade wars broke out across the continent, as Austria and Prussia invaded Denmark gaining control of Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg. In 1866, all manner of changing alliances brought about the Austro-Italian War. In 1868 a revolution in Spain led to Queen Isabella II being deposed
The Asian continent was falling under greater European colonial dominance as the 19th century progressed. In China in 1860, British and French troops defeated the Chinese at Pa-li-Chau and in 1862 a rebellion was suppressed near Shanghai. The Meiji dynasty was restored to power in Japan when the Shogun abdicated and the shogunate was abolished. In the Pacific, in New Zealand, the Second Maori War began in 1860 and continued throughout the decade.
This is one of the finest maps ever created by Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Jr. These maps were printed from lithographic stones taken from steel engravings and hand-painted in some of the most brilliant inks ever used on a 19th century map. This incredible map shows geographic features, towns, cities, and railroads in great detail. This picture cannot begin to do justice to the stunning floral border surrounding this map!
If you are looking for a fascinating piece of art, to decorate a home or office, these truly "limited-edition" prints are perfect. Antique engravings, & prints are extraordinary examples of the 19th Century printing and engraving arts. As conversation pieces they are unequaled. A beautiful old print or engraving is an actual snapshot of our history. Any of these, increasingly rare, works of art are also some of the most thoughtful (and personal) gifts you can give. Unlike so many other gifts, antique prints allow you to present someone a piece of the past.
