This hard-to find, hand-painted map of was created in 1838 by Thomas G. Bradford. Although the copyright shows 1838, this piece was probably printed in 1841. It shows the United States in the days before the Mexican American War. The Southwestern U.S. was still part of Mexico and Texas was an independent nation. The
West" was still quite wild with only a few, hearty emigrants heading across the plains to the "Oregon Country." The homelands of various native American tribes are shown.
This fascinating old map would bring a much higher price if not for the "offsetting" (which was caused by the oxidizing ink from one side "burning" an image on to the other side of the folded sheet). While it detracts from the value, it is the 160+ year old patina of time.
